9 UPVA CEA Awards for Team STC
The 2006 UPVA Creative Excellence Awards were a couple nights ago. Yes, I know it says 2006, long story. Anyway, it was a great night hanging out with other videographers from around the valley. Team STC managed to win an award in every category that it entered into, with the 07 CEA awards only a couple of months away we are looking forward to another challenge.

Eternity Begins the Trailer
For the last month or so Tom, Mike and myself have been working with one of the coolest clients we have had come through the office. Amy and Mark, who were happily married on Sept 8. Congrats guys. When they came to us they actually wanted to make a movie trailer about their courtship. So they wrote an outline, I wrote a script, and then we totally threw that out the window and adlibbed all the lines.
With a budget of dollars, no sound guy or dp we managed to plod along and came out with a pretty fun clip. I’m not sure if future couples would like to do something like this or not, but we had a blast. We actually all got to make cameo appearances. (I am the doctor, Tom is the colleage, and Mike is the single getting tossed at the end) Anyway, if you’d like to see the trailer here is the link.

Creative Excellence Awards
So I haven’t really paid much attention to the blog this summer. It figures, Laura just barely got me to change the picture of the week on Friday, so this one’s dedicated to all the procrastinators out there. So this past week Ted went down to Vegas for the week to the 17th Annual Wedding and Event Videographers Expo in Las Vegas. From what I understand it was an awesome experience and Utah was well represented. I think Utah videographers walked away with 4 or 5 awards. Congrats to David Perry from David Perry Films and Mike Nelson of Remember When Videos for the awards that they brought home. We received a Finaist Award in the Bridal catagory which means we were within half a point of the bronze, and were chosen by the judges as having one of the Top Nine International Demo pieces. I’m glad that I sent those entries in the day before they were due. Again, the procrastination factor. We should be hearing back about the UPVA Creative Excellence Awards here anyday, I’m looking forward to see what will happen there.
Here is the link to the bridal that nabbed a CEA Finalist. EmilyBridal
Sticking with the theme of the entry I’ll have to get the demo link up a little later.

Uncle Bob - Our Favorite Uncle
I figured for my first entry in the blog I would try to sound off about a subject that has been and will continue to be a greater problem in the wedding industry. It is an important issue to consider when planning your day. So that you know there is an individual who is passing himself off as a professional videographer and photographer, but in reality he doesn’t know the difference between a Digital SLR and 33mm film. (Yes, I know that 33mm film does not exist. Inside joke here at the studio. Sorry.) This person has been affectionately dubbed Uncle Bob in our studio. He’s everywhere, but here is the tricky thing, Bob doesn’t have to be an Uncle. Bob can be an aunt, a brother, a red headed orphan child you met last week, or second cousin twice removed on your stepmother’s side. Basically Bob is someone who offers to photograph or film your wedding for free, or at a serious discounted price. Now while Bob might be necessary in some situations here are a few things that you might want to consider before you put your wedding day memories in the hands of our good friend Bob.
1. Education - Does your Bob know the rules of composition? Does your Bob know how to operate his/her camera manually? It was explained to me this way by a professor in film school. I might be able to get into a nascar and make it go around the track a few times, but without training I’m not going to be able to make the car run to the best of its ability. Now if Ricky Bobby were to get in my Toyota Corolla he could probably drive my car like it has never been driven before. It is the same thing with a camera. Uncle Bob might have a nice camera, he might even have a nicer camera than me, but If he/she doesn’t have any training, a professional is going to be able to do more with an old school 8mm camera than Bob is going to do with the latest camera sporting 500,000 mega pixels. Is your Bob a member of any organizations that focus on continual education such as the UPVA or the IPPA? Education and experience make a world of difference.
2. Turn Around Time - You tend to get the service you pay for. Its as true for photos and videos as it is for hamburgers. When things (Wedding Photos and Videos) are free they tend to not have a very high priority. Life starts up again, things get busy for Bob and the couple, and thus the photos and videos are not turned over very quickly. (Sadly enough sometimes they are not turned over at all.)
3. Professionalism - Now if Bob is real tight with the family will he/she be ready for all the important moments or will he/she be sitting at the back of the reception catching up with Grandma on what all the cousins are up to? Does he/she know all the workings of a ceremony? What to shoot when?
4. Back Up Equipment - Now if Bob drops his camera does he/she have back up equipment, or will your night be remembered through a montage of photos collected over the next year.
5. Portfolio - Professionals will usually let you peruse their previous work so that you can tell if what you’re going to get is worth the price you’re paying. In most cases your Bob isn’t going to have much of a portfolio for you to look at. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t buy a car that I can’t test drive first.

Uncle Bob checking his focus.
So there it is, the first blog of the . . . blog. These are just a few things to consider if you’ve been offered free wedding coverage. If you trust your Bob and he/she is pretty reliable you could take him/her up on it, but if your Bob is the type of person who shoots with 33mm film or might wind up in jail shortly after your wedding you might want to reconsider your options.
